The Rise of AI-Facilitated Research

In our digital world, it has become increasingly common for artificial intelligence to be used as a tool to improve our daily lives. For students, AI is making its way into research. AI-facilitated research involves the integration of artificial intelligence in the research process. This is starting to be seen more commonly in schools.

However, is this good or bad for us, and should we be concerned about it?

The Pros

There are many advantages of using AI for research, which include:

  • Reduces research time: AI can quickly gather data from various sources across the internet in seconds.

  • Makes information digestible: AI can summarize or simplify complex information as needed. It can also translate information into different languages.

  • Brainstorming: AI can help you formulate a hypothesis, experiment ideas, etc.

The Cons

While AI can be useful, it’s important to consider certain disadvantages:

  • Inaccuracy: AI is not perfect, and relying on it for information can lead to misinformation and incorrect data.

  • Unreliability of sources: Using AI to get information means that you lack an exact source for where you get this data. It will be harder to develop citations and your research may be seen as unreliable without sources to back it.

  • Skill atrophy: Relying on AI to gather, summarize, and organize information leads to the decline of critical thinking and research skills.

So, What Should You Do?

In the end, while AI has its pros, it’s important to not become dependent on it. When carrying out larger research operations, AI can be used to help create experiment ideas, but it shouldn’t be the basis for gathering data. Be mindful.
